does anyone out there even know what auld lang syne means? we sing it annually to ring in the new year and i've always loved the sweet melody. the song resonates with me. i kind of take it as a lullaby reminding us that everything is going to be alright.
so, like any good college student, i turned to the internet and found a wikipedia article about the song:
"The song's title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago", "days gone by" or "old times". Consequently "For auld lang syne", as it appears in the first line of the chorus, might be loosely translated as "for (the sake of) old times"."
for the sake of old times. isn't that beautiful? so the song goes: should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? should old acquaintence be forgot [for the sake of old times]. i'll tell you what. the scottish know how to write a good tune.
so, for the sake of old times, joe and i decided to welcome 2014 in a very timeless way. with an "LA day", as we like to call them. days spent galavanting around our city doing timeless things and visiting our favorite spots. this time we visited and oldie and tried out a newbie.
one of our favorite places, the garden at the walt disney concert hall, is one of LA's hidden gems. it's absolutely beautiful day or night.
it was our first time ice skating at pershing square. twinkly lights, people! so delightful! and i didn't fall down once, even though i sure did look clumsy most of the time. joe was a great skating partner and hand to hold and, of course, he was a natural on the ice. he has this talent for being secretly good at everything. ice skating, ping pong, darts, you name it. crazy kid.
years from now, we will visit the ice at pershing square and the garden at disney hall as timeless memories. few things make us happier than timeless days in our favorite city. for the sake of old times. for auld lang syne.
