the stories of a los angeles violinist

valentine

Added on by Jordan Martone.

my one and only valentine's day as a fiancé, my last valentine's day as a bachelorette, my last valentine's day as a slocum.

this year's lovin' got a head start from my sweet students. these three siblings that i teach took three tries to get it right. "jorden", "Lordan", and then "jordan". my name is misspelled more than one might think. i've been on professional gigs where they've spelled my name "jordon" and let me tell you, i've never met a jordon in my 21-years of living. idk where that spelling comes from.

anyways... i love those kids.

joe surprised me this year with lots of flowers all over the apartment. i'm always yammering on about how i want more fresh flowers in my life, and he listened. what a sweetheart. joe, i'd give my elementary school fun-dip valentine to you.

tulips are on my list of favorite flowers. i have very fond and distinct memories of planting tulip bulbs in the garden with my mom when i was about 4 or 5-years old. i remember wearing my own pair of little purple gardening gloves and eating banana laffy taffy too? (i lived in oregon for a hot minute. then we moved to the mojave desert where coyotes ate our cat and i knew my life was going to be very different. true story.)

valentine's day always brings up a lot of memories for me. the memory of making sure i never gave a fellow elementary-schooler a valentine that said "love" on it or else they'd think i was seriously in love with them. the memory of my dad bringing me flowers at school lunch every valentine's day. the memory of going on my first valentine's day double-date and being so terribly nervous. the memory of my first valentine's day with joe when he surprised me with flowers and chocolates in my dorm with the help of my roommates.

valentine's day is another reason to have a celebration. i don't think people celebrate enough. life is short, life is great, and life deserves to be celebrated. i made a sort of promise to myself this year to try and celebrate more, whether it be making a cake for joe because of his success at work, or whether i treat myself to a pedicure for getting a good grade on a test. even throwing parties more often, just because. life is a wonderful thing and we should celebrate that we even have it.

happy valentine's day to all you love birds. tell someone you love them today.
